Aussie Translation Guide #2
One of the fun things of Travel is learning the local lingo. Australia has innumerable terms that are as unique in the world as their very own Platypus (which I saw in the wild just recently- fascinating little creatures!). This is the second in a series to come. Feel free to add a few of your own in the comments section.
Australian = North American Translation
Fair Dinkum! = Honestly! Truthfully! Used like “No way dude!”
Bottle-o = Liquor Store. They don’t sell beer in gas stations but they have drive through Bottle-os
Salad = crappy tomato, onion, a couple of whole leaves of lettuce (not torn up into bite size pieces), and maybe grated carrot or beetroot. Generally no dressing. Served on the side of most dishes.
Woop Woop = No not that! You dirty people! Woop woop is the middle of nowhere. Waaaay out in the country.
Sus = Suspect, Dodgy, Questionable. Usage- “That taxi driver seemed a bit Sus”.

Yeee Haaaa! Learn to be a Jill-a-Roo or Jack-a-Roo!
Giddy up little doggies! Grab your RM williams and your best cowboy hat! No Horseback riding experience necessary! If you ever had a dream as a child be a real Jill-a-roo or Jack-a-roo, here is you chance! You can take the class to fulfill those childhood fantasies or better yet to get a JOB! Now how is that for a different working holiday?
The 5 Day Jackaroo and Jillaroo School is located in Leconfield NSW, which is near Tamworth. For around $490 you too can become an Australian cowboy or cowgirl. They list: Horse riding, whip cracking and lassoing (hmmmm…how do you say…useful…..), calf throwing, fencing, swimming the horses, sheep shearing, milking, mustering and much more as the things you learn! He he. Each Class starts on Monday. Upon completion of the course they will help you find jobs and give a reference.

Sydney- Need Internet? Head to the Rocks!
Everyday Thousands of people visit and conduct business in the most Historic Precinct in Sydney- The Rocks. Honestly- this is one of my favorite parts of town. When I first arrived I avoided it because I thought there would be too many tourists. Man was I missing out!
What I soon discovered is that the Rocks is a visually striking place- right at the foot of the Harbour bridge (in fact you can walk up stairs to the bridge itself!). The markets are awesome, there are TONS of cool bars that mostly locals attend, and it is much closer to Circular Quay than I thought. Over all- it is a really popular spot. Now there is one more reason to fall in love with the oldest part of Sydney- FREE… yes- that is right FREE wireless Internet access!

Australian Vs. North American- Translation Help no.1
One of the fun things of Travel is learning the local lingo. Australia has innumerable terms that are as unique in the world as their very own Platypus. I’ll try and provide as many helpful translations as I can to help the Aussies heading to America and Canada as well as those of you heading Down Under. All you Aussies heading overseas… a Serviette is called a NAPKIN! This is just the first in a series of these Translation Guides to come! Feel free to add a few of your own in the comments section.
Australian = North American Translation
Westie = Trailer trash (he he he)
Soda = Soda water or club soda (don’t ask for soda or diet soda thinking you will get Coke or Pepsi- I’ve made this mistake a couple of times)
Arvo = Afternoon
Snags = Sausages
Big W = Wal-Mart

Perth- Host to International Ultimate Frisbee Comp! 11-18 Nov 2006
Grab a blanket, esky (cooler) of beer, and get on out in Perth to watch the World Ultimate Club Championship. Be there to witness the fast-paced, aerodynamic skills of 2,000 athletes from 20 countries. Representing Australia will be 15 fiercely-competitive teams, including three teams from the host city of Perth.

Melbourne’s G20 summit has been hailed a success and the friendliest held since the group’s inception seven years ago

Yea! I'm off to see U2 in Adelaide!
Hello Hello…. There’s a place called Vertigo! Hey gang- I am utilizing a concert as a GREAT excuse to go visit a part of Australia I have not yet been to. This is actually a really good strategy (in my humble opinion) for two reasons.
First, if you are living and working in Melbourne or Sydney- it is often difficult to get tickets to the really big acts like U2 and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. You dramatically increase your chances of getting a ticket by going to some of the smaller “Big cities” like Adelaide, Brisbane and Darwin.

The Australian Spirit in Elle Macpherson!
Do do dodo do doo dooo… refrains of MC Hammer’s Can’t Touch This are running through my head! Elle Macpherson, Australia’s very own “Body” and supermodel is too fast for a London mugger. Australian’s are known as a cheeky brash group- and good on em! While getting ready to attend a Move for Aids chairty ball in London November 10th, a masked thief snatched her hand bag. Not one to stay down from a fight- she snatched it back. Can’t touch this….. Ah the spirit …

The Aussie Classic- 'Burger with the Lot'
So you wonder Where in the Bloody Hell are you? Well if the answer is Australia then you should… no you are obliged… to order THE Aussie classic- the iconic- the massive- the BURGER WITH THE LOT! (unless of course you are a vegetarian, lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, or just full…)
