Backpacker growth a positive sign
Growth in backpacker visitor numbers in the year to September 2004 was a positive sign for the industry, Tourism Minister Fran Bailey said.
Ms Bailey said new figures showed backpackers were staying longer in Australia and in increased numbers, with 490,000 backpackers visiting Australia during the year ending September 2004.
The figure represented an increase of 29,000 backpackers on the previous 12 months.
