Memories of brutal treatment linger

FOR a young New Zealand backpacker, the trip was going to be an adventure of a lifetime.

Instead, it turned into a "living hell" that will deter him from visiting Australia again.

It was only legal necessity that forced the tall 20-year-old man to return to Brisbane briefly last week to give evidence in a six-day Supreme Court trial against one of five men accused of kidnapping, torturing and robbing him in Brisbane in June 2003.
