Lawmakers, Educators Fear International Students Avoiding US Schools
"American universities are facing significant increased competition for the top international students from institutions such as Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada," he said. "The number of Chinese and Indian students going to universities in Australia last fall was up 25 percent. Great Britain saw a rise in Chinese and Indian students of 36 and 16 percent respectively."From Voice of America
It's no wonder that international students are deciding to head to Oz and other places instead of the U.S. With visa restrictions and the way the government oversteps civil liberties (Patriot Act anyone?), I'd go somewhere else too.

As a US student going to school in Oz, I think you're way off base here. It's got nothing to do with immigration restrictions (you know how hard it is to get into Australia?) or civil liberties (or that I'll be kicked out if my wife gets pregnant?) ... look at the tuition costs. Degrees in the US cost too much. Period.

I do know how hard it is to get into Australia as a student, however, I believe that restrictions in the U.S. are stricter. Degrees in the United States are very expensive, but so are the ones in Australia. Although I do not doubt that SOME students avoid US because of the cost, if you come from somewhere like India or China or a poorer country and can afford full tuition overseas, I don't find there to be a huge difference between the two, but that's just my opinion :)
