Before Ivan Milat ravaged backpackers, pie salesman and well-to-do family man John Wayne Glover was terrorizing 80-year-old woman and strangling them with their pantyhose. Convicting of killing 6 women - although some believe there were many more - Glover was found dead in his cell after hanging himself.

Australians Helping Thailand Recover
Australia is doing its fair share to help restore tourism in Thailand. In addition to spending $A1.5 million to support coastal recovery, the Thai government plans to drop 120 million baht in Aussieland and Europe in order to promote the value of traveling in the SE Asian country.

Australians Caught in Katrina Storm and Aftermath
Halfway across the world, Australia can’t escape the devastation of Katrina. The country is pledging 10 million dollars to aid in rebuilding costs. Although more than 30 Australians have been removed from the New Orleans area, 40 or so are still missing or in the region. Some Australian tourists tell of ‘murder and rape’ in the sports dome where up to 20,000 people were housed.

Drug Smuggling Idiots Part 3
“Two children’s books and a wheelchair are alleged to have been used to smuggle more than $3 million worth of drugs into Australia in two separate incidents.” The culprits in the first case are two adults in their 60s(!!!). I guess grandma and grandpa need a little coke pick-me-up every now and then as well. The children’s book carriers claim that they were carrying the books for a friend. Doh! Australia Murders
Famous backpacker murders come together with both continued press for the ultra violent Wolf Creek movie (see Blood on the sand) and the ongoing drama surrounding Ivan Milat and his backpacker murders (see Milat case stalked by uncertainty) and possible partner. There are certainly enough “hmmm” things to make you think twice about the contention that Milat acted alone. I’m just waiting for someone to say that Milat’s conspirator - possibly a sibling - is the one who kidnapped Peter Falconio.

Bali and Terrorism
Not surprisingly, after the recent bombing in Bali, Australians anxiously await a terror attack on their home soil. However, investors haven’t reacted nearly as aggressively in wake of these bombings - prompting the media to ask if they’re used to terror attacks. Still, the government has issued tougher warnings about travel to the island.

Mystery still swirls over 2000 Aussie backpacker murder - a 25-year-old man was killed and his girlfriend repeatedly stabbed and raped while they were camping in Northern Thailand. In the ensuing weeks, men were rounded up and charged, later to be freed on acquittal. However, due to poor evidence and police skills, there is a chance the real killers will never be caught.

The Australian Immigrantion Department can’t catch a break - no should it with stories like that of Cornelia Rau and perhaps more shocking, but less reported, that of Vivian Alvarez. An Australian citizen who hadn’t left the country since 1993, Alvarez was greatly injured in an accident. Suffering from mental illness, she could not tell officials how she got the country…although she could tell them her name. It wasn’t enough to keep them from deporting her to Manila, however.
