Young man survives ravine plunge

An Australian man is recovering from a close brush with death after surviving a fall of nearly 30 metres into a ravine in East Vancouver on Tuesday.
The man, who had been drinking, climbed up onto a railing over the ravine near the Commercial Drive SkyTrain station, apparently looking for somewhere to relieve himself.

Undies crack the high-tech big time
Who says that Australians are anything but forward thinking? Who else puts such technical expertise into…undies?
There’s been a lot of, um, movement in men’s underwear lately. It seems Australian men are no longer content to pick between boxers, Y-fronts or Calvins. With new technical innovations and designs, it seems they are enjoying a little experimentation.
“Australian men have always been a bit more adventurous with their underwear,” said Paul Gould, general manager for Bonds. “At every point that we’ve given them something new, they’ve really lapped it up.”

Glut makes Australian wine cheaper than water
Yet another reason to go back to Oz! Cheap wine!
Australian wine is being sold off cheaper than water, as a glut of grapes pushes the cost of a bottle to below two dollars.
Bumper harvests for three straight years have led to a massive oversupply, with up to a billion litres of unsold wine in storage tanks across the country.
Leading winemakers have seen their shares tumble and many grape growers could be forced out of business.
But for the consumer, it means quality wines are available at a fraction of the normal price as producers move their excess stock in unlabelled …

When killer kangaroos roamed the earth
Scientists have recently discovered remains of a fanged kangaroo. Only in Australia would a scientist label an animal a “demon duck of doom” instead of ‘carnivore’.
Forget cute, cuddly marsupials. Paleontologists say they have found the fossilized remains of a fanged killer kangaroo and what they describe as a “demon duck of doom.”
A University of New South Wales team said the fearsome fossils were among 20 previously unknown species uncovered at a site in Australia’s northwest Queensland state.

Parents pinch pennies from piggy banks
Tsk tsk tsk - now, it’s your parents that you have to watch out for!
One in four Australian parents regularly “borrow” money from their children’s piggy banks to pay for anything from bread to luxury holidays, a survey said Wednesday.
Mums are more than twice as likely to raid their children’s savings than dad, with 35 percent of mothers confessing to the crime compared with 16 percent of fathers.

400-year-old tree faces axe

A SUBURBAN Melbourne council wants to save a 400-year-old gum tree standing in the path of a $2.5 billion tollway development.
The Dandenong Council has lodged a last-minute application for a heritage listing, and it is taking legal action, to protect the gnarled red gum which started growing long before the arrival of Captain Cook.

Australian boxing bout sparks nationwide brawls

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Pugnacious Australians just love a good fight — in the ring or in the pub. Some 30 bar brawls broke out across the nation, and one man died in a fight, on Wednesday night following a much-hyped televised bout between Aboriginal boxer Anthony “The Man” Mundine and Danny “The Machine” Green.
Mundine, an ex-footballer renowned for his quick mouth and flamboyant clothes, won the super middleweight non-title fight on points at Sydney’s Olympic Stadium, but not everyone was happy.
