Darwin: airport arrival and getting into town
Darwin Airport is an inviting very neat and tidy small to midsize airport and has an inviting sign that says “Welcome to Darwin”. With my face pressed against the plane window trying desperately to catch a glimpse…silly as it sounds the sign did bring a smile to my face. As it turns out, the local folks (around 100,000 of them) are so friendly and open the welcome sign is absolutely heartfelt from the city.

People always say that Melbourne is in Sydney’s shadow, but really, does anything thing it is anymore? Sure, more people may fly into Sydney, but it seems like most make it 8 hours south to Australia’s ’second city’.

Living Down Under
When I moved to Sydney, Australia to attend Sydney Uni, I justified it to all my friends and family by saying that “if the ticket was so expensive, I might as well be there for awhile.” I left in July, thinking that this was it - one last flirtation with travel and life overseas before I finished up school and headed to the scary world of work and two-week vacations.

Numbers are finally backing up what Melbournians have known for years: their shopping is better than that of their northern neighbor. With almost 50% of New South Wales residents ranking Melbourne as the place to shop in Australia, the focus seems to be on ’strip shopping’ versus mall shopping. Melbourne edges closer to Sydney as Australia�s top tourist destination
Watch out Sydney! The city’s southern sister is making a move on Sydney’s dollars. According to Tourism Research Australia, Melbourne has 12% of the combined domestic and international spending while Sydney has 15%. The commonwealth games in Melbourne next year should help the city boost numbers even higher. Perhaps now Sydney won’t be so content to rest on her laurels. Eternal flame put out by vandals
In a bozo, stupid move by inconsiderate teenagers (likely) or idiotic adults, the Eternal flame in Melbourne has been extinguished.
Guards found shattered beer bottles around the flame, which has gone out a number of times since 1954, although rarely due to vandalism. Eternal flame put out by vandals

Popular Hostels in Sydney
Sydney, being Australia’s largest city and point of entry for more than 85% of international travelers, is full of hostels. Prices for a backpacker hostel Sydney side usually run around $20 a person for shared accommodation. Although there are a number of places to lay your head, a few giants tend to dominate the backpacker and flashpacker market. They tend to be close into the city, or at least, the action, are relatively clean, offer a bar or other services and most importantly, can host large numbers of travelers at any time.

Brisbane – dead boring or just plain dead?
Poor Brissie is back where some say it belongs - as the butt of a joke. A recent book declared the city to be simultaneously boring and dangerous. Backpackers' bed bugs get the bite
New rules to help backpackers in Sydney! Clover Moore, has proposed that all new hostels will require mattress protectors, pillow covers and dense foam to ‘eliminate bedbugs’. Coverings must be washed after each backpacker. While these rules will only apply to new hostels, I’d pay the extra $$ to know that my bed was bedbug free. Backpackers’ bed bugs get the bite

A new guide to the “happening” places in Adelaide has been released.
The Hip Guide to Adelaide is a free pocket-sized publication aimed at backpackers and young travellers.
The guide highlights the pubs and clubs, eateries and shopping highlights of the South Australian capital, as well as its range of galleries, museums, parks and beaches.
In Adelaide, the guide will be available from the Rundle Mall Visitor Information Centre and the South Australian Visitor & Travel Centre, as well as backpacker hostels and selected shops and caf�s.
