Sydney- Northern Beaches -Cafe Ibiza!
A trip up the Northern Beaches is not complete without a trip to Avalon. Famous for the worlds slowest pedestrians- Avalon works on its own sense of time. Unconcerned and unhurried pedestrians wreak havoc with the local traffic. A spectacular place to watch the ensuing pandemonium of overly polite drivers and unrushed pedestrians is from Café Ibiza.

Northern Territory- Jabiru
A milestone corner of The Triangle, Jabiru is little more than a company town designed to support the local Uranium mining operation. It is also considered the entrance to Kakadu Park. The township is little more than a jumping off point for package tours and its amenities are basically limited to a Caravan Parks, a hotel, a travel agent, Council Office, Grocery Store, Café and Gas Station.

Darwin- Cavenagh Street Attractions
Cavenagh Street is two over from the Backpacker hangout/Entertainment district of Mitchell Street. Watch out for… or… check out the small “adult entertainment” district plunked right between the two (depending on your preference). There are many fun shops and cafe’s on Cavenagh- as well as the post office and a good Woolworths (”Woolies” = grocery store). Mostly a business street- here are three unique and useful places to check out…

Darwin- Restaurant Review: Relish
An awesome kitchy litte café reminiscent of Santa Fe. There are wood framed ceiling hangings, dirt red walls, local art, and an eclectic selection of collectibles including an R2D2, mini deer head, dash board, and gold high-heels all hanging from the menu boards.

Sydney- Coffee the size of your Head!
Barking Frog, Manly (Sydney) –
I am going to shoot myself for telling you guys all about this place, but I do have such a hard time keeping such a good place secret. The Barking Frog is an absolutely gorgeous little café with a very French seaside town feel. This fantastic café that serves the most delicious coffee- in a bowl the size of your head…turns into one of Manly’s hottest dance spots for locals by night.

Sydney- Camping in the Northern Beaches
The Basin
New South Wales has a very organized set of national parks that are complete with cooking, shower, and camping facilites. Among the parks I have visited, The Basin is a stand out. If you live in or around the Sydney area it is the easiest way to get completely OUT of the city in under an hour.

Darwin- NightCliff Aquatic Center
What a find! This sparkling swimming center is built right on the cliff overlooking the Darwin Harbour up in the suburb of Nightcliff. At the corner of Nightcliff and Causarian Roads, It is virtually unpopulated. The pool facilities include swimming, lap lanes and a beautiful children’s pool with an Italian style fountain in the middle.

One for the girls and the arts community- seriously though- this modern place would appeal to most serving brekkie and lunch there are community events posters all over the walls and windows.

Northern Territory- Bark Hut II
As an add on, the manager of the Bark Hut happens to be a local biologist. Yes folks not only can he make a foaming cup of Nescafe…he organizes wildlife safaris and specialty fishing tours. Tom Starr runs Wild Plains Safari’s. They specialize in small group tailor made trips to Mary River National Park and Arnhemland.

This place is a Culture Vulture Backpackers dream. Ah, this place is just down right cool no matter who you are quite honestly. Where else can you get a Laksa+beer+theatre for $24! The Old Fitzroy is a fabulously seedy dingy little place that has creeky dark wood stairs, tiny little hall ways, 1970 furniture, pool tables, a whole thai kitchen smashed into a room that is about 1 meter square tucked under the stairs, and a theatre that produces plays from the next generation of upcoming writers!
