Brisbane as a backpackers location

Brisbane, often refered to as a big country town 10 years ago has been developing and I like the changes.

Last Minute Stuff

Coming down to the wire somewhat before I leave Brisbane for a couple of days in Melbourne and then a full two weeks in Bali. I have a full to-do list, but I’m feeling confident I have the time to do everything I need/want to.

One of those things is a birthday dinner for Ging tonight in West End with about 20 of her closest friends. I’m too much the gentleman to reveal her age, but anyone reading feel free to leave your birthday wishes below.

Happy Birthday, mate!

Casualties of War

It was a great night to be an Australian, as the Wallabies suffocated the All Blacks in an against-the-odds semi-final win in the Rugby World Cup.

In the aftermath in the pub I watched it in, everyone was everyone’s mate. English fans dressed in red & white were backslapped and told “We’ll see you next week!” Kiwi fans were given some hearty, but good natured, stick.

Blast from the Past

On the way home from the gym today I stopped off at a corner store to pick up some milk. I used to go to this corner store almost every day after primary school to spend pocket money on video games (Gyruss and 1942) and mixed lollies.

Since it was hot out I decided to treat myself to an ice-cream/ice-block and saw one I haven’t had in maybe 20 years (crap, am I that old?). The Golden Gaytime is unlike any other ice-cream bar I’ve ever had, not least because of it’s unusual name. You’d think, in these days of …

Fantastic Find

Omigod I had the best meal in my life last night and I have to plug this place. It’s only been open 4 weeks and will surely gain momentum, but it has to be said.

West End Street Festival 2003

I’d never heard of this annual event before, but it’s been charkling along for at least 18 years. So big thanks to Ging for making me aware of it and asking me along with her crew to enjoy a day in the sun (even if we spent most of it in the pub!).

It was a weird ol’ day yesterday, with rain in the morning and muggy heat and sunshine by mid-afternoon. But the weather certainly wasn’t keeping people away. by the time I got there, the street was packed with folks, the sidewalk tables and chairs of the pubs were all full and the bands pumping out the music.

To me, it was like a small slice of Eugene, Oregon. There were plenty of folks who would have been at home there and all the food vendors and craft stalls reminded me of Saturday Market. There were also quite a few stalls with a political angle and there was even a place to get a massage by an alien.

Sunset Cinema

Went to a screening of Gettin’ Square tonight at the Sunset Cinema in the City Botantical Gardens. This Aussie movie has won a few domestic awards recently and I was looking forward to seeing it. I’m a sucker for cool crime stories in the mold of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and The Usual Suspects.

The venue is a cool way to catch a flick. You’ve got the city lights around you and a downward sloping natural amphitheatre to sit in. You need to bring your own blankets and cushions, and one of those Thermorest seats would have been perfect. My only gripe about the venue was that the toilets were over 100 metres away. They serve beer as well, so you really have to decide how much of the movie you’re prepared to miss if you don’t plan your trips well. Some nearby port-a-loos would have been a better option in my opinion.

Thunderstorms

I must admit I love a good thunderstorm. I remember as a kid going down to the local school oval in the pouring rain for a game of “slushy football”. We didn’t care about the number of tries scored, only how far you could slide after diving for the tryline.

Last night was a cracker of a thunderstorm. Didn’t arrive over us until around 10:30pm, but the light show was unreal. Would have loved to drive to the top of Mt Coot-tha to watch it all.

Today there’s no rain and it’s very warm again. The only indication that there was …
